Significant setback for the German startup scene: Compared to the first half of 2022, the total volume of investments was halved to €3.1 billion in the first six months of this year. Berlin remains the hotspot of the German startup ecosystem, accounting for 47% of the total amount of venture capital invested in Germany. EY Startup Barometer Germany – January 2023

Despite market uncertainties and 43 percent less venture capital investments in 2022, the German startup industry recorded its second strongest full-year result. In addition, the 1000 deal mark was surpassed for the second time in a row. Berlin continues to lead the top. Despite the market uncertainties, investments in German startups remain at a high level: The total value of investments in German startups decreased by 20% in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, the first six months of 2022 mark the second-best first half-year for the German startup industry.

2021 was the year of the Unicorns – the number of German startups with a billion-dollar valuation quadrupled from six to 24 within one year. EY Startup-Barometer Germany – July 2021

German startups received more fresh capital in the first half of the year than ever before: A total of EUR 7.6 billion flowed into German startups – more than three times as much as in the same period last year and more than in the entire year 2020. The number of financing rounds also jumped: by 62 percent to 588.

EY Startup Barometer Germany – January 2021

Across Germany, the number of financing rounds in 2020 again increased significantly compared to the previous year: by 39 deals or around 6 percent to a total of 743 deals. Though this is a healthy mark, the total value of these investments declined: by 15 percent or 956 million euros to around 5.3 billion euros. EY Startup-Barometer Germany – July 2020

Despite the corona crisis, more German startups received fresh capital in the first half of this year than in the same period last year: The number of financing rounds rose by 8 percent to 360. However, there were hardly any major transactions that had still set financing records in 2019 – and the investment volume fell accordingly: by 22 percent to 2.2 billion euros.
